Personally, I liked it.

I don't have a rampant hate for Kanye West, and really, really think the Akira-homage video they did could have been executed better. I mean, it came so... close... to being phenomenal... all the right homages were there, etc.

I've never been against sampling tracks or full mixes as long as it still has the same spirit of the original song.

Taidan had a few opinions about it here (http://www.krakowstudios.com/forum/showpost.php?p=542&postcount=1), but It's rare for me to find a cross-genre action as particularly offensive to what I like.

I dunno wether to like it or hate it. Hate it because the song is different from the original and because he's rapping and I can't stand rap, or like it because the video is pretty good and the song still sounds alright. Really I just need to get over my own pretentiousness.

Thoughts on Rap:
I'm not completely averse to it. Sometimes it gets completely on my nerves, sometimes I can't understand it. (As in, I'm not aware of the lyrics, and I'm not familliar with the singer, so I can't make my ear comprehend the meaning of the song.) Sometimes, it's hilarious. (Example: Hennessy XTC - B.G. (http://www.lyricsfreak.com/b/b.g./hennessy+xtc_20010841.html))

I don't put Kanye West into the "Rap" genre. I put him into "Hip Hop" before I put him in "rap", basically because my boyfriend tends to listen to underground/gangsta rap. As a whole, his music gets on my NERVES.

He says that if all the music is going to sound the same, at least he's gonna make it beat. Yeah, well if all mine's going to sound the same I intend for there at least to be one wailing guitar.

Then maybe you can aid me, and I mean this in the sincerest way.

I've only listened to the foul Soup singles that have floated onto the radio at different points. Do all of their songs revolve around commentating on/namedropping various facets of pop culture in a semi-ironic way?

Or is it merely that these songs are the most marketable, rather than their entire schtick?

Also, I can't stop listening to Clapton.

I just realizd that I said "foul" instead of "four" in my original post.

Anyway, here's what I've seen of him

Girl All the Bad Guys Want - commentary on gothy/punky types as well as white trash

Punk Rock - Punk Rocker cliches

1985 - the same 80's jokes we've heard from a thousand other sources

That other song about Texas - stuff about Texas.

None of it is very much creative, and the band seems to think that somehow they're repelling themselves from such silly stuff when in fact they're only perpetuating it. I can't really take their jokes seriously (goddamn that's such an oxymoron, but you know what I mean) when they themselves sound like a bunch of fucking children.

Also, I can't say if all bands in that genre do this, because I'm not sure what their genre is.

Bowling for Soup to me is alike an inverted Avenged Sevenfold. The former isn't that good but does things to make them look talented and clever. The latter seems to have no qualms looking like mopey gothy kids in a band, but goddamn they can actually shred and I really want to like them.

They're silly, sometimes they hit home (for me), but mostly just silly. I don't think they're pretentious about any of their songs. If the badassness of a song were rated purely on it's lyrics, then it would be music's equivalent of Devilman...

The entire CD has a different feel than their other ones, and although I like most of the songs, there has been a lot of outcry because it's not "Meteora". There's less experimentation in it, and at least one anti-war song "Hands Held High". The entire CD is less angst-ridden and more subtle than their other work.

Guile's cpu in Street Fighter 2 was the epitome of being cheated by the coin-op you were playing against: he could rival Ryu's adoukens (the ranged energy attack), shooting them as fast... faster! than you could, despite the fact that the move needed some 1.5 seconds to be charged (back...then forwards plus punch). Which in turn made severely inconvenient to play as him.

More or less I used to play all the SF2 characters and beating a Ryu user with Guile was certainly a heavy umiliation... Something you needed to be taught was the method to start charging the moves when you were still doing something else: like jumping or blocking. Most people were charging them in plain view, by retreating or crouching for seconds, quite anti strategic.

I had an easy time picking my team. Kim fits me great. Sagat fits me great. From there, I thought Haohmaru's Flame of the conquerer and his Hard Slash(AB slash) were great for closing close matches, so he made for an easy third slot. Then I played Samurai Showdown for real, and I like him there too.

Though if they had Jubei in CvS2, I'd really be cooking with gas. Fortunately for me, he's an ugly old man who doesn't turn anyone on, therefore he is fanboy/girl less. And without that, he couldn't even stay in for SS3, much less CvS anything.

I hate fighting game politics.

In SF2, I used to play with that wonderful vintage Blanka, before I learned how great Sagat was. CPU Blanka could certainly give a lesson in coin-op cheating. But none could demonstrate the lack of ethhics in the CPU beter than Balrog. Bastard never stopped his charged special moves for even a second. I want to be able to tap into that Gigaton Punch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBHxXufqOEY) too!

Hoahmaru's hard slash is unfairly overpowered, to simple in the game to use and hit (something that is at least not true in the SS games) and I just do not consider it fair to use. Especially when Macky has to spam it just to beat me >_>

BTW, has anybody played Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 or the original Samurai Shodown? Both pretty awesome games and ones that shouldn't be forgotten just because of their age.

Ah yes, Real Bout. Good shit. And Samurai Showdown. I liked that aspect of the Samurai Showdown games, where you have to treat it like a real swordfight and not get hit often. The game is very calculating and defensive, but just because it's a change of pace from the norm doesn't make it any less fun.

And Haohmaru's AB slash is just as ridiculously powerful in his original games too. It's also slow as hell in whatever game he's in(slower in SS games, I think, but still). Taidan sure never had a problem with it when I played in him in CvS2. In fact, he broke right through any offense based on that slash in late matches, and the only way I could beat him was if I landed a Flame of the Conquerer(unless I somehow swept him with Kim and Sagat, but I think that only happened once. Grr.).

"Hibiki seems disgusted by the prospect of death. If her opponent is killed during the bout (indicated by a special death animation, note that this will not happen by default in the European and American versions of the game), she will appear visibly shaken, and shocked by her own actions. However, if one continues to kill her opponents for 6 matches in a row, she will grin mischievously, as though she has grown attached to the killing (note that this only works in a single player game). Her ending dialogue also changes to reflect this."

Interesting, Taidan. I've only seen her fight in one-on-one matches; I've never seen, nor played her, through a tournament.

I like her character before that ending. Frankly it was like good characterisation in reverse... therefore bad characterisation >_>

She is one of the best character designs to come out of SNK though. She's not kawaii at all, she is quite sophisticated looking. Lately I have taken to giving most characters in these games a shot, I find many of them a lot beter to use than I thought they'd be.

Anyways, maybe now if we want to keep on this subject, we shift it over to "What are you playing?".

I claim bull! It's an awesome move if you hit it, otherwise it's fairly easy to dodge. Let's just count how many times you've hit me with it... Once. You've seen me playing well as him when it was Haohmaru vs Haomaru, I can use all his moves and don't need to spam that one. You just don't like getting hit by it, that's all.

And Hibiki rocks, Hybridial also hates playing me when I'm her. :D Something about the slashes, iono. IMHO cheapest character is Joe.

Well you see, anime and manga have just not moved on from the genre archetypes he created. That may be a good, or bad thing, but either way, it's simply true. Especially with Gurran Laggan, which doesn't even try to hide the fact that it's pretty much a Nagai-esque Mecha space romp. It's a homage to it all, if anything, but, well, you just can't beat the original.

I have been listening to... two different dubbings of Cagliostro No Shiro, by Miyazaki. The Lupin anime is very popular in Italy, but Cagliostro of all movies is the one in the worst situation localization-wise. One has to choose the lesser evil, but consider the magnitude of the changes:

1990 edition
Goemon: so that's why you called in the inspector.
Lupin: ooh, so our friend Goemon got itself some sixth sense.
Goemon: my sixth sense is my best friend.

2007 edition
Goemon: so that's the reason for your actions.
Lupin: ooh, so our friend Goemon's really smart after all.
Goemon: obvious. Fight the poison with poison.

The 2007 edition has a better translation from the original, but it sounds worse when spoken. To counterbalance, the 1990 voices are crap. Ay ay ay, it's difficult to buy christmas presents for the nephews.

Are they remixing the shit out of them like they do here? Or are they just horrible covers(also like they do over here)?

No, it's the old stuff (ancient Christmas songs) getting played, and the songs contending for Christmas number one getting played over and over and over.

And then the fan-sub junkies use it a "evidence" of localization being the enemy.

It isn't. Bad localization is. And in this case, there doesn't seem to be a good localization choice. Rats. I liked the movie though, and I saw an English dub. Not sure which.\, but it was probably the older one.

Macky: I quite like the older songs, but when they get played over and over as much as they do, it's easy to get real tired of them, real fast. Which is why I wish they'd lay off them until mid-December at the earliest, but fat chance of that happening.

I don't think I'll ever get tired of "Snoopy vs. The Red Baron", though.

Spruce Moose: wanna see something scary? I found it while browsing Lupin sites. This is the same frame from one of the episodes of the first season, taken in 1970 (http://digilander.libero.it/minikame/lupin/1st_series/ep19ita-5.jpg) and then 20 years later (http://digilander.libero.it/minikame/lupin/1st_series/ep19jap-5.jpg). You might call it "Death of a reel of film". I had vague notions of a fight over some film conservation malpractices in Japan, which lead to damage to i.e. the original Gundam tapes ... but the reason for which people did let video rot like this is beyond me.

edit
By the way, the Lupin on the left is looking forward with convergent eyes... that style I have only seen in Hugo Pratt. I wonder how many other authors do the same, even today. It's a little oddity though, all character look strabic like that.

Yeah, most of them are pretty good to listen to, when it's actually near christmas. And when they're not overplayed/played in every single fucking shop and on every single fucking music channel. This "OMG it's nearly Christmas!" attitude when its the end of November start of December attitude is starting to annoy me. I'm easily annoyed though. :D I think I'm going to cry if I hear Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love one more time though. No doubt that's going to be Christmas no 1 this year.

Nice, not heard too much Epica, is it all like that or is that the token 'Epic' track a lot of these albums have?

Staying on topic:

"Blood Bound"

HammerFall

I've really gotten into these guys of late, they walk the line between hair metal & power metal, but in a good way. Plus they have some of the coolest album art ever.

I think Epica more than anyone truly blur the line there. The Divine Conspiracy is notable for it's length but even their 5-6 minute songs tend to sound epic.

Like also, I'm listening to Chasing the Dragon off the same album and that's definitely a very grand song to, it's 7:40.

hehe, someone had the balls to do a custom notechart for Wolf & Raven on Guitar Hero - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAwJMjdsLjA

I gotta admit, it looks fairly well done and true to the song, a song which is really legitimately harder to play than Through the Fire and the Flames, considering we all know that half that song is really improv *stares really hard at Dragonforce who whistle innocently*, not to mention is clearly artifically harder in GH3 than it even really should be.

To me it's more "they have a couple of flat out awesome songs I can listen to anytime, the rest... meh".

They're not bad though, their performances are good, but they aren't imaginitive enough when it comes to the execution of thier songs, which is the main reason Stratovarius are amazing and they're only okay on the power metal hierarchy. If they got a decent keyboard player, maybe they could be better, because lets face it, power metal is as much about that as it is the guitar, and having too much of a focus on the guitar in power metal is boring, and not what the genre is about. The odd return to their roots by Stratovarius with songs like Maniac Dance are good everyonce in a while though.
