Ouch. Looks like somebody already changed the past; the laws compelling banks to take mortgages from people who can't prove solvency were passed in the 90s. The bubble didn't appear out of nowhere.
Is any reference going to be made to the fact that, under the paint, Ben's teeth are made of cast-iron? Just curious.
(By the bye, he would know what a mortgage was. They were the principal reason why the requirement for bankruptcy laws got written into the US Constitution, which he had a hand in writing.)

There are no laws that require banks to loan to people with poor credit. The crisis was caused by banks getting greedy and thinking they'd found a way to get money from people with little funding and poor credit. They'd take the initial loan, then package them together and "securitize" them. Essentially they sold shares in the group of loans. In doing grouping them the way they did, they made them junk bonds, but the ratings agencies rated them AAA because that's how they made money. They also broke the chain of title in packaging them in this way, causing further problems. Many properties now have no clear legal owner, making it nearly impossible to resell.
I know people want to blame government for this kind of problem, but this crisis is entirely the product of the bank and stock system.

Technically.
My boring grandmother and boring parents had the sense to invest in stocks for me and my sister just after each of us was born. No, we weren't rich. It just meant that we were playing with plywood toys made in the garage for our first ten years.

Basicly they put they put the money in a corner untill years later befor saying "ok now you can use it."
I am a live for the now kind of person....so that kind of thinking causes me pain. Sure keep it for a rainy day....can you give me a 100% that i will be alive when that rainy day comes?
Why be poor and miserable now? I am putting it till later....like when I am not able to remember the name of the person thats trying to get money from me.
What do i mean later? I am poor now and I owe college edumacations £4000. How ever i get ot enjoy this snazzy Ipad my friend sold me for a quarter of the full price. SO SUCK IT!

And now I want Ben to tell Spinny Come With Me if You Want to Live.

.... Any who has payed attention (and dosen't get there info from Faux News) knows that the bank gave out bad loans to people on houses they couldn't afford, At the same time they hid a lot of stuff in the fine print, jacked up interest rate after a few years, chopped up and bundled good loans with bad ones the sold them as AAA+ securities, tunred it all into a game so complex that even they had trouble understanding what was going and now makeing even more money forcloseing on millions of people some of whom aren't behind on there payments or have payed off there home loan.
The only laws passed were ones passed decads ago to enourage banks to help the poor and minorities buy houses.

--The cast-iron dentures question remains open. (I was raised by a historian. Details interest me.)
Most dentures of the era were made from carved Ivory or human teeth (son't know what they were set in) and required some effort to keep in place (hence the sour pussed faces of the founding fathers, they weren't a bad mood they were trying to keep there teeth in). That Ben's hypothetical iron teeth have nothing on the Daimond Dentures of this (http://wiki.lspace.org/wiki/Cohen_the_Barbarian) guy.

Also, it looks like this will be the end of the 'Clever use of Scenery/Posture to avoid showing Ben Franklin's Junk' Arc.
Why do I have this nagging feeling that he is going to get his ass kicked? Call it the fall of hubris, he's being too...obvious...about his powers. I'm almost expecting the universe to pull a 'Breaking the Haughty' on him.

:D
I suppose I needn't be quite SO delighted; finding another Terry Pratchett fan is about as difficult as finding a successful bar near a medical school.
I do note in passing that Cohen is friends with someone who is arguably the luckiest man in the world, though you'd have a hell of a time convincing Rincewind of that.
Ben was, above all else, practical; I speculate that he saw the trouble everyone else had with false teeth and had a mold made of his gums, then had his dentures cast to fit perfectly. This IS the guy who got fed up with changing his glasses all the time and sawed two sets in half to make the first bifocals.
I'd heard that Washington's teeth were wooden, but have no data. John Chapman is something of a hero if you consider that he ended what amounted to a scurvy epidemic in America.
Last ever, I promise, reference to banks by me in this thread:
You have a gaggle of geese, and a herd of cattle. What do you call a collection of bankers?

Nah, some super villians are half way decent people who you can sympathise/idenitfy with. Catwoman is a "super-villain" that many like, Two Face/Harvey Dent has a strong good side and has been reformed more than once, Magneto is often depicted as noble but misguided. So to truly be a good form of revenge Spinnerettte would have to make her seem to be more of a Green Goblin type villian and play up things like the fact the she trew away her humanity, turned two or people into driders (possibly lie about how voltary it was) and how Heathers' attempt at friendship was used..

I must say, there's been a bit of economic misunderstanding in this comic. In the latest strip, we see an overestimation of bank stability in a period when there was none of the new deal regulations we take for granted (banks were so unstable that not only was there a book for people to calculate what multiple of the charge would have to be on a check for you to be willing to risk the bank not being there anymore when you tried to cash the check, but the book was published on a monthly basis to keep up with the rate of attrition, which is likely why the oldest bank in the US was founded in 1784 (http://www.mint.com/blog/trends/the-five-oldest-banks-in-the-world/)) and how quickly interest accrues in a savings account (let's say you put 37.5 cents in an account in 1806 and got 1000% growth by today, thereby giving you enough to buy the cheapest dinner at the type of hotel where spending that money immediately would have gotten you the "best dinner with pint of good beer or cider (http://www.foodtimeline.org/foodfaq5.html)").
Then there's the popular misconceptions of where the current economy came from. The real source was the fact that every portfolio and 401(k) was filled with junk loans that had been sold as AAA-rated derivatives. For a more detailed rundown from a Nobel Laurette, I suggest reading this (http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2010/sep/30/slump-goes-why/?page=1).

So now Sahira's powers, that she got in another chapter that most of us didn't read because it wasn't online, are the new status quo? And what are these powers? She doesn't have six harms anymore. Yeah, she basically copies the powers of anyone she touches. With London she becomes a werewolf, with Tiger she becomes a Hot Amazon, and with Hether she gets the extra arms and other spider powers. And she can mix and match. I can't remember what Krow said the restrictions are though...

The more powerful the form she takes, the quicker it wears off. That's the only restriction I remember him mentioning.
I'm probably going to be one of the few people who only knows the details of Sahira's powers because I've read spoilers, here and elsewhere. Indyplanet still does all their payments through Paypal. My refusal to trust paypal with my information hasn't changed.
So. That suit must be very tight to have that effect on Heather's breasts. And it sounds like Sahira may have cheated slightly in her silk sources.

Looks like it. It looks like it's sort of like Rogue's power, except she doesn't drain the power of the person she copies. And going by the dialogue she does it by picking up their DNA. So, presumably it works on mutant powers, not spiritual/magical stuff?
Gargravarr

I'm not sure I'd count today's comic as Sahira recalling Heather's powers at will. She may not have actually touched Heather, but she still needed her DNA.
